There are so many proteins to choose from, and I still hear people say, “Whey is the best protein.” Right? WRONG! Well at least it depends on when you consume it. Most people don’t know, but like carbs, different proteins have various digestive rates. From fastest to slowest are: whey, eggs (whites), fish, poultry, red meat, casein, yogurt, cottage cheese. So if you are consuming whey first thing in the morning and immediately after your workouts, then YES, it is the best protein, but if you have it before bed, then NO, it is not!

Right when you wake up your body needs to be refueled just like after a long workout, so whey and eggs (whites) are your best protein options. Throughout the day, fish, poultry, and red meat are best to consume. Before bed however, you need something that is going to sustain you throughout the night and prevent you from entering the dreaded catabolic state when your body breaks down all that hard earned muscle. You want casein, yogurt, or cottage cheese before you hit the sheets because your body breaks it down at the slowest rate.

It takes a lot of practice, but small alterations to your diet such as these can make a world of difference in how high your energy is, how great you feel, and how amazing you look! So to get the best use of your proteins, and eat the right ones at the right time!
